Papyrus, das Papier des Altertums, das aus dem Stengel der Papyrusstaude, einer Schilf- oder Binsenpflanze, dadurch hergestellt wurde, daß man den mit dreieckigem Querschnitt (Dreieckseite 10–15 cm) wachsenden Stengel in gleich dicke Streifen schnitt, diese angefeuchtet und mit den Längskanten aneinander gereiht zu einer gleichmäßigen Schicht ordnete und diese Streifen zu einem zusammenhängenden Blatte dadurch verband, daß man ähnliche Streifen, ebenfalls angefeuchtet, jedoch senkrecht zu den unteren Streifen darüber legte, die beiden Schichten durch Pressung oder Hammerschläge zu einem Blatte verband und an der Sonne trocknete. Die Verklebung dieser Streifen wurde wahrscheinlich durch den beim Pressen austretenden Pflanzensaft bewirkt. Zur Herstellung der Papyrusrollen wurden mehrere solche Blätter aneinander geleimt. Der Name, der aus den Worten πά = Pflanze und βίρ = Flechten zusammengesetzt ist, wurde auf unser heutiges Papier übertragen.
