Iridium [1]

Iridium, ein dem Platin nahestehendes, stets größere oder geringere Mengen desselben enthaltendes Metall.

Kristallisiert regulär. Silberweiß, gelblich angelaufen. Uneben und hakig brechend, wenig dehnbar. Metallglänzend. Härte 6–7; spez. Gew. 21,57–23,46. Sehr schwer schmelzbar und vor dem Lötrohr unveränderlich. In Säuren scheinbar unlöslich. Schmilzt indessen mit Salpeter zusammen. Wird meist mit Platin zusammen gefunden (Ural, Brasilien). Selten und daher untergeordnete Verwendung in der Porzellanmalerei zu grauen und schwarzen Farben,[212] häufiger zur Herstellung von Spitzen goldener Schreibfedern, von Ziehplatten zum Drahtziehen, als Schneiden für seine Wagen, zu Nadeln der Aerzte u.s.w.
