Potential der Verrückungen. Sind ξ, η, ζ, die Verrückungen des Körperpunktes m (x, y, z) in den Richtungen x, y, z (s. Elastizitätslehre, allgemeine), und es existiert eine Funktion F der Koordinaten x, y, z, deren vollständiges Differential sich ausdrückt:

Potentialbewegung wird eine Bewegung genannt, für welche ein Potential der Verrückungen oder Geschwindigkeiten besteht. Je nach Umständen spricht man dann auch von Potentialdeformationen und Potentialschwingungen. Zu letzteren gehören die gewöhnlichen Schallschwingungen in isotropen Körpern (Bd. 3, S. 382).
